Eight people were killed and one is missing in Australia after severe thunderstorms battered the country's east over the Christmas holidays. The storms brought large hailstones, torrential rains, and strong winds that blew off roofs and brought down trees. A yacht capsized near Green Island in Moreton Bay, resulting in the deaths of three men. In Queensland, a nine-year-old girl and a woman were swept away in flooded stormwater drains and found dead. Two people died from falling trees. Fast-rising rivers and streams posed a risk of bursting banks and inundating campgrounds.
