Volcano erupts in southwest Iceland

A volcanic eruption began in Iceland south of Reykjavik following an earthquake swarm, according to Iceland's Meteorological Office. The eruption, which started north of Grindavik on the Reykjanes peninsula, was visible on webcams. A Coast Guard helicopter will soon confirm the eruption's exact location and size. The Reykjanes peninsula, which had not experienced an eruption for eight centuries until 2021, has now seen three eruptions in remote areas. Iceland, known for its volcanic activity, has 33 active volcano systems, the highest number in Europe.
