Al-Qaida's Yemen branch says leader Khalid al-Batarfi dead in unclear circumstances

Khalid al-Batarfi, leader of al-Qaida in Yemen, is dead. Saad bin Atef al-Awlaki is the new leader. Al-Qaida claimed responsibility for the 2015 Charlie Hebdo attack. Qassim al-Rimi, the previous leader, was killed by a US drone strike. Al-Batarfi fought in Afghanistan and led forces in Yemen's Abyan province.
